Assign phone numbers to a SAMI Bot

Choose which of your active numbers route calls and texts to a SAMI Bot, and pick its primary number.

A SAMI Bot needs at least one phone number before it can take calls or send texts. You assign numbers right inside the bot, in the Identity section.

Assign a number in the Identity section

Open the bot from SAMI Bots, then look for the Phone numbers card at the top of the Identity step. Calls and texts on the numbers you assign here use this bot.

  1. Open the bot's Identity section

From SAMI Bots, open the bot you want to set up. The editor opens on the Identity section, where the Phone numbers card lists every active number in your organization.

  2. Assign one or more numbers

Toggle on each number that should route calls and texts to this bot. Only active numbers appear in the list — if a number is missing, check it in phone settings first.

  3. Mark a primary number

If you assign more than one number, set one as the primary. The primary number is the one SAMI uses by default when she reaches out on this bot's behalf.

Each number serves a single bot. If a number is already assigned elsewhere, the list shows which bot owns it — reassigning it moves it to the bot you're editing.

Why a number has to be assigned first

Some features only work once a number is in place. The clearest example is the outbound workflow: when you ask SAMI to build a workflow with AI, she uses the bot's assigned number as the SMS sender. Without an assigned number, the Build workflow with AI button stays disabled and shows a prompt to assign one first.

So the usual order is: assign a number here, then set up the cadence over in Workflows or through the bot's outbound workflow step. The assigned number is what every text in that cadence sends from.

Give the bot its primary number before you build the outbound workflow. That way the SMS sender is locked in and SAMI's drafted cadence is ready to go live.

Manage your numbers

The Phone numbers card only shows numbers that are already active in your organization. To buy a new number, release one, or check status, head to phone settings. For texting compliance and registration, review your setup in A2P registration so your assigned numbers can send SMS without interruption.

Once your number is assigned and your workflow is set, you're ready to review the rest of the bot and publish it.
